How to make a mega-hit and what it takes

K-pop girl group BLACKPINK’s newest single, “Pink Venom” (released on August 19th), tops iTunes top songs charts in 69 countries and peaked at number one on the Billboard Global 200 chart for two weeks. The music video on YouTube surpassed 90 million views in the first 24 hours alone. The song is included in their newest Album, “Born Pink,” released on September 16th. The Album has broken the record for the biggest first-week sale by a Korean girl group in history by selling more than 1.54 million copies in the first week of its release.

But who is behind such a successful song?

As you might know, these days, it’s not a one-man mission to write a song anymore. The song “Pink Venom” is described as a pop rap, hip-hop, dance, and EDM song that also includes traditional Korean instruments such as the geomungo. So it takes much more than just one person to write a worldwide number 1 hit track like that.

The song was released through YG Entertainment and Interscope Records. The track was written by Teddy and Danny Chung, composed by Teddy, 24, R.Tee, and Ido, and the production of “Pink Venom” was handled by 24, R.Tee, and Ido. Since the song should express BLACKPINK’s confidence and deadly and sweet personalities, writing the lyrics for the 90-beats minute track wasn’t easy. Due to the variety of elements in this song, it took months to create the 3-minute-6-second song for Korea's biggest girl group.

Writing songs in today's music market is a challenge in itself. Constantly changing trends, language barriers, inability to collect royalties and restricted market access by significant record labels make it hard, especially for new talents, to make songs.
